Marc: The gcc 4.2.* and 4.3.* series compilers have a problem dealing with large "loops" that are "recognized" because of the computed gotos, loops that consist of 50,000+ basic blocks in some instances. This has been "fixed" in the 4.4.* release by attempting loop-invariant-code-motion (LICM) at the register-transfer-language (RTL) level only for loops with fewer than 1,000 block at -O1 and fewer than 10,000 blocks at -O2. Perhaps this change will be backported to the released compiler series, but it hasn't happened yet. Some Linux distributions (e.g., Ubuntu 8.10, Fedora 10) ship 4.3.* or 4.2.* series compilers, and so they have a really hard time compiling some Gambit-generated programs with the default gcc options; e.g., the compiler benchmark takes about 29 GB of memory to compile on x86-64 with the default Gambit gcc options, see http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=39157 Can you add something to the configure script to see whether gcc-4.[23].* is being used and to add -fno-move-loop-invariants to the gcc options in that case? Customizing printing of record types

I vaguely remember some discussion on how to control printing of record types in Gambit, but I can't find it. I don't need to fully customize the string representation of an object, I just want to at least turn off recursive printing. For example, if I have a record type which contains other record types, for my current scenario I'd rather it just print the type and uuid of the instance and not the data of the fields. - James

Setting heap parameters from scheme code

Hi all, I'm wondering if it's possible to set the heap parameters (min, max, loading) from scheme code at runtime? I know I can set GSCOPTS or pass command line options, but that means I need some mechanism for setting them before my executable runs (eg a stub loader), which is not ideal. I had a look through Gambit's symbol table but couldn't find anything that looked applicable... Thanks! Darren

Loading object files...

Hello all! I was wondering why the gambit interpreter complains about loading multiple times an object file (i.e. a compile .o1 file). It is pretty annoying not being able to reload a file that loads its required modules... :( What should I do instead? Load the requirements manually in the repl? This is not very convienient :( I could also just load the source file (load "module.scm") instead of the object file (load "module") but I would not benefit of compiled code perf... Thanks! David

window manager in gambit

hey, so my current dev environment is xmonad + emacs + gambit; this is about to become xmonad + jedi + gambit; but I'd prefer to have my window manager be running on gambit too so ... is there anyone else out there also interested in this? we can probably start out with something like scwm or sawmill and hack it to run on gambit ... or if you're really good with x11, we can even start with some thing leaner let me know if there's interest thanks! (mainly interested in this as a hobby project)

Using Snow from Gambit?

This may be a dumb question (I'm new to Gambit, and have just discovered Snow), but is there a way to access Snow packages from Gambit? e.g. if I start a Gambit REPL with gsi, is there a way to "(require XXX)" which will then load the package XXX into my Gambit environment? I have downloaded and installed the snow-generic release, using Gambit as host, and can use snowman to download and install packages, but I seem to be missing the "big picture", that is, how do I actually *use* these packages? Hope somebody can enlighten me, Paul

Hi! Is anyone here doing OSX / Cocoa / Objecive-C development using Gambit? If so, can you point me to some good pointers? I'm mainly from the C / Linux / OpenGL land -- and I'm quite unfamiliar with how Gambit bindings on OSX end up working (especially with the Objective-C interaction). Thanks!
