Greetings, I have been building a library catalogue application in Gambit-C. It can import CSV, build indexes, and perform searches. It is now time to think about storing this in a file. Does the write function produce output which can be used to recreate the data structures I saved? If yes, how is this done? So far, the application has a character (command line) interface. If I want a GUI, should I use a binding to an GUI toolkit (e.g. FLTK)? or wrap the application with a Tcl/Tk & Expect front end? If a binding, which one? This looks pretty cool, and I don't remember seeing it on the gambit mail list before; from the home wiki page: Futhark Homepage Futhark is a series of technologies built on top of Gambit-C scheme system. this technologies are: * Ansuz, implements a combinatorial parser for scheme * Ehwas, a web server built on top of Scheme and Ansuz. * Gebo, on top of Ehwas, Gebo extends actor model to javascript world and permits to communitcate between scheme and javascript through JSON messages. It is also a system that implements push technology as Comet * Yera, is a language and a compiler that targets javascript. yera is a language to describe user interface with the paradigm of functional reactive programming. Unit testing fun

Hi Gambiters, I've been thinking for a long time about the simplest unit testing framework I can think of. Maybe I can call them 'unit-tests-testing-a' and 'unit-tests-testing-b' but this becomes a pain when I move files around. What I want would be somehow, to have a variable created automatically that's _local_ to the particular file, so that I can still run something like: gsi -e "(load \"a.scm\") (magic)" or gsi -e "(include \"a.scm\") (magic)" or gsi -e "(magic1 \"a.scm\") (magic2)" and have the proper tests run. [ANN] Scheme Language Steering Committee

[Apologies if you get duplicates of this message.] As members of the newly elected Scheme Language Steering Committee, we thank all who voted for expressing their continuing interest and involvement [1]. We have decided to expand the Scheme Language Steering Committee from 3 to 5 members. Using the results of the election just held, we are adding Olin Shivers and Chris Hanson to the committee. Olin and Chris have agreed to serve, and are already serving ex officio. Before we can add Olin and Chris as official members of the committee, we will have to amend the charter [2,3]. We are also considering other changes to the charter, such as removing or modifying the prohibition against members of the steering committee serving as editors, removing the R6RS-specific goals, and changing other details of the process. We are looking into various mechanisms for keeping the Scheme community informed of our progress and involved in the process. We hope to announce the details in the coming weeks. Reading S-expressions

I've been dabbling with scheme off and on for a while but I am just getting started with Gambit-C. I am trying to read the output of a program printing information in the form of s-expressions. The problem is that it puts single quotes around strings. eg. (domain (domid 1) (on_crash restart) (image (linux (kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-5-xen-amd64) (ramdisk /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-5-xen-amd64) (args 'root=/dev/sda1 ro ') ... and so on I have an mzscheme script that reads it by messing with the readtable; the code looks like: ; (mzscheme code) ; Read after redefining so that single quotes are handled like pipe quotes (define (read-data inport) (parameterize ((current-readtable (make-readtable #f #\' #\| #f))) (let ((domain (read inport))) (if (eof-object? domain) '() (cons domain (read-data inport)))))) The readtable stuff in gambit is different, obviously, so how would I go about tackling this problem? Garbage Collectors

This is slightly OT ... but I'm trying to write a scheme -> C compiler, in gambit, so forgive me. :-) What are good papers / tutorials on _real world_ garbage collectors? I'm interested in things slightly more complicated than the Mark & Sweep / Copying garbage collectors found in SICP. Generational / soft real time seem more interesting to me; but I'm rather than reading academic papers or some guy's rant, I'd like something along the lines of "I built _popular system X_; and here's the GC we used; these are the tradeoffs we made; and this is why we made them." trade imbtalance

To whom it may concern, I just joined this mailing list recently because I didn't think I had much to say. I don't know anything about UNIX. The tube on the 333Mhz Mac that I had for nine months burned out so now I have a H-P running Windows Vista. The Gambit version I had on my Mac was 3.0. I downloaded the latest of this version on the new machine and found out that when you type a ( or ) you get angle brackets. So I downloaded 4.0.0 and a few later versions and found out in every case you get warnings from Microsoft that they never heard of these people, they don't have the right kind of code and they won't install it. I assume some other people had have this problem. Why can't some of your people tell your ambassador to the United States tell our people that this is against NAFTA. Does anyone know anyway of getting Microsoft's 'security' shield off the Gambit icon I've got? Frank Gizinski

The module system does macro export automatically, and dependency loading and compilation. The documentation will describe this clearly.
