Hello! I'm interested in playing with Scheme a bit lately, so I thought I'd check out Gambit. Well, I had no problems getting the interpreter to work, but I seem to be having issues with the compiler. I installed this from the Ubuntu intrepid repo btw. Here is an example session, showing that some very simple code just seems to segfault when compiled. Tried this on two different computers, what am I doing wrong? Thanks. undefined symbols error when compiling

Suggestion for a new GCC compiler option

Dear Marc (and other Gambiteers): I just ran an experiment where I added every combination of 0, 1, and 2 options from the following list to the standard options for Gambit on x86-64 Linux and the development (4.5.0) gcc compiler, and measured the speed of the direct and inverse FFT transforms used in bignum multiplication: (define compiler-options '("-fthread-jumps" "-falign-functions" "-falign-jumps" "-falign-loops" "-falign-labels" "-fcaller-saves" "-fcrossjumping" "-fcse-follow-jumps" "-fcse-skip-blocks" "-fdelete-null-pointer-checks" "-fexpensive-optimizations" "-fgcse" "-fgcse-lm" "-fgcse-sm" "-fgcse-las" "-findirect-inlining" "-foptimize-sibling-calls" "-fpeephole2" "-fregmove" "-freorder-blocks" "-freorder-functions" "-frerun-cse-after-loop" "-fsched-interblock" "-fsched-spec" "-fschedule-insns" ;; "-fschedule-insns2" ; always on ;; "-fstrict-aliasing" ; always off ;; "-fstrict-overflow" ; always off, since -fwrapv is on "-ftree-switch-conversion" "-ftree-pre" "-finline-functions" "-funswitch-loops" "-fpredictive-commoning" "-fgcse-after-reload" "-ftree-vectorize")) What I found was that "-fschedule-insns" significantly improved the code, it ran in 1.264 seconds instead of 1.444 seconds. Note that - fschedule-insns2 is already added to the command line. (For what it's worth, the two options -ftree-pre and -fgcse generated the worst code, when both those options were added the ffts ran in 1.552 seconds.) This options is added at optimization level "-O2" on all architectures with "large" register sets, and I believe that even if it's specified on the command line, it is turned off for i386 (usual Intel x86) code (but this should be checked). So I'm asking that people might run the benchmark suite on various architectures after configuring gambit with, e.g., ./configure CC="gcc -fschedule-insns" --enable-single-host and compare the result to those without adding -fschedule-insns to the command line. I suspect that for both ppc(64) and x86-64 there could be noticeable speedup, but I'm not sure what will happen with arm or some of the other architectures that Gambit might run on. Brad

syntax-rules error

hi all i try to define the following syntax: (define-syntax when (syntax-rules () ((_ test stm1 stm2 ...) (if test (begin stm1 stm2 ...))))) but getting the following error with the bracket pair after syntax-rules highlighted (in emacs): *** ERROR IN (stdin)(a)2.17 -- Ill-formed expression this occurs on both version 4.4.4 and 4.5.1. i try on chicken scheme and it works fine. this is basic stuff but i can't get around it, have searched on the net but nothing came out. am i missing something? or? thanks antonitio

Tcp server error?

Hi all! Can anyone help me pinpointing what is wrong with the follow tcp server code? Note that the ip address is correct. I tried to replace the server with the good old netcat and it works just fine (i.e. that the client successfully connects to the nc server). Creating a c-define-type using c++ reference

Im porting a C++ library to gambit and have numerous functions which take references as parameters or return type. (define QObject-setObjectName (c-lambda (QObject* const_QString&) (void) "arg1->setObjectName(arg2);")) (define QObject-children (c-lambda (QObject*) (const_QList<QObject*>&) "____result = arg1->children();")) My problem is I don't know how to c-define-type the reference types. On the one hand I want them to act as "type", when being passed in as parameters. On the other I want pointer behaviour, so that the whole object isn't copied on return. Has anyone else run into this problem with c++, and how did you solve it? Regards Ivan

Where to find Black Hole?

Is the latest version Black Hole available somewhere? mwaza.dyndns seems to be down and git://github.com/pereckerdal/blackhole-libs.git only has the bundled libs but no Black Hole itself. The "very old copy" linked in wiki gives me a "deserialization error" when trying to (load "build.scm"). -- tomppa

A website has been setup to publish various documents pertaining to our activities. The steering committee will be presenting and discussing these documents at the Scheme workshop on August 22. Our hope is that by publishing them now, a more fruitful question period will ensue at the workshop. How to create small standalone executable with Gambit-C?

Dear all, I am new to Gambit-C. I keep hearing that with Gambit-C, it is easy to create small executable. But when I tried, a simple hello world program takes around 3 MB when compiled as a STANDALONE executable. Is there a way to create small executable which includes only used functions, just like in C, we don't link the whole library into the executable. Thanks.
