You need these 2 files: serve-gsi-repl.scm ; the code which registers a REPL server on port 9000 start-gsi-repl ; a shell script which starts a new REPL by contacting ; the server on port 9000 You'll have to start Gambit like this gsi serve-gsi-repl.scm - or just put (load "serve-gsi-repl.scm") in your .gambcini.scm file. Then to start a new REPL, just execute the shell script. Note that you can do this remotely with ssh: ssh foobar ./start-gsi-repl Let me know if you encounter problems. Note: don't execute gsi under emacs otherwise the line-editing features will be disabled. Moreover, the shell script uses the "nc" utility program, so it has to be installed. I tested this on Mac OS X... it probably works on Linux, and probably not on Windows unless cygwin is installed. Marc

If anyones interested. When loading a source, the function ##read-all-as-a-begin-expr-from-psettings is called which reads the whole file using the reader as if it started with a 'begin' form. Unlike some common lisp parsers, it does not read a toplevel and then macroexpand it. But you can evaluate a form during reading using the #. macro form (well, you have to enable this. see below). Unfortunately, ##read-all-as-a-being-expr-from-port (another function in the chain of calls) makes a copy of the ##current-readtable (the default readtable) and then passes it around to other reader macros. Solutions to being able to redefine the reader table while the file is being read. (1) Redefine ##read-all-as-a-begin-expr-from-psettings to not make a copy of the readtable. Probably not a good idea. (2) Create a special reader syntax which imports the current readtable/environment as a paramter into the special reader when one loads/compiles a file. I like this one. So instead of doing #.(begin (func-1) (func-2)) you redefine #. to behave the same way except (current-file-readtable) now references the actual readtable/environment being used. Note that you can change the current-readtable parameter value as shown below and thus change the reader macro when loading non scripts (regular .scm files). I think what happens if the file is declared to be a script is that first the default readtable is passed in but is then copied and then modified to fit the appropriate language. If it is a regular scheme file, i don't think the default readtable is modified, but i haven't looked into this. I was wondering if it is possible to change a readtable while loading a file. I have the file tt.scm with the following contents (output-port-readtable-set! (current-output-port) (readtable-keywords-allowed?-set (output-port-readtable (current-output-port)) #f)) (input-port-readtable-set! (current-input-port) (readtable-keywords-allowed?-set (input-port-readtable (current-input-port)) #f)) (display (map keyword? '(foo :foo foo:))) If the readtable had changed it would've produce #f #f #f when I had typed (load "tt.scm"). Rather, it displays #f #f #t. So is it possible to change the readtable of the file currently being read so that display produces the correct output.

Interactive 3D graphics with Gambit-C

Hallo, I am thinking about doing some basic 3D graphics with Gambit-C. Although I am sure code generated by Gambit-C is fast enough[1], I am a bit worried about the garbage collector. What's the type of garbage collector used by Gambit? If it kicks in during interactive rendering, should I expect annoying pauses? Gambit compiling from Source

Hi, I am new to Gambit as well as new to Scheme programming. I would like to download and use a Stable version of scheme. Also, I want to compile from source rather than use the binary distribution. Can someone tell me which file I need to download? I see bunch of files in the site. Which version is the stable version? And further whats the difference between gambc-v#_#_#-devel.tgz & gambc-v#_#_#.tgz and which one should I download? Thanks, Nikhil

unquote-splicing silently drops non-list data

Gambit's unquote-splicing ignores the end of improper lists (when splicing into the middle of a list): > `(hello ,@"hmm" well) (hello well) > `(hello (unquote-splicing '("hmm" . Some questions about reader in Gambit

Hi, Marc! During last three days I am porting Qi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qi_%28programming_language%29) to Gambit. qiYACC, qiReader, qiEval, qiCore are already ported, next will be qiProlog and Qi type checking machinery. And it will be cool if I integrate Qi reader with Gambits one. And there are some questions: 1. Could you please in two words explain source-location data? 2. Do interpreter and compiler use same method of file reading? Same readtable? 3. Qi constructions after Qi-reader are just like scheme ones, but before they are often different. For instance: Qi: [ A B | C ] after qi-reader: (cons A (cons B (cons C ()))) How can I integrate Qi reader into Gambit to slightly transform input with minimal effort? Vasil
