Link loadable library to Scheme file
by Thomas Hage 07 Sep '21

07 Sep '21

Hello community, I want to declare procedures in a file `a`, which can be reused by loadable libraries. If I understood correctly, I need to -flat -link the new file `a` and link this together, but I don't grasp the steps. This produces my loadable library, which is working fine. `gsc -ld-options "-ltree-sitter -ltree-sitter-java" -o bin/ts-java-binding.o1 lib/lang/java/ts-java-binding.scm` But I want to access methods from file `a`, which lies in the parent directory. How should I assemble the new loadable library? Thanks in advance.. Thomas

I'm looking for people that have used Gambit in "production", in projects of a commercial nature or with outcomes that benefit society (teaching, research, medical apps, etc). Specifically I would like letters of support for a grant application to get research funds from the Canadian government to continue the research and development work on Gambit. Please contact me privately at feeley(a)iro.umontreal.ca if you think you fit that description and I will give you more details. Marc

Hi, Found an example of calling Scheme functions from C but cannot compile it https://gist.github.com/ncweinhold/991905 % gsc -c somescheme.scm % gsc -link somescheme.c % gsc -obj somescheme.c main.c somescheme_.c % gcc somescheme.o somescheme_.o main.o -I$GAMBIT/include $GAMBIT/lib/libgambit.a -lm -ldl -lutil -lssl -lcrypto ld: error: duplicate symbol: main >>> defined at somescheme_.c >>> somescheme_.o:(main) >>> defined at main.c >>> main.o:(.text+0x0) collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status How to prevent the main function generation in somescheme_.c ? Many thanks for any help. -Sonny

ICFP 2021 Student Research Competition: Call for Submissions
by Sam Tobin-Hochstadt 16 Jui '21

16 Jui '21

ICFP 2021 Student Research Competition Call for Submissions ICFP invites students to participate in the Student Research Competition, which will be held virtually alongside the main conference, in order to present their research and receive feedback from prominent members of the programming language research community. As usual, the SRC consists of three rounds: * Extended abstract * Poster session at ICFP 2021 * ICFP presentation To make the virtual competition fruitful, we will make sure that every student will have an "invited audience" during the poster session. We are also planning to organize a social event for the students. Please visit the SRC website for updates. ### Important Dates Submissions due: 2 July 2021 (Friday) https://icfp21src.hotcrp.com Notification: 16 July 2021 (Friday) Conference: 22 August (Sunday) - 27 August (Friday) ### Submission Details Each submission (referred to as "abstract" below) should include the student author’s name and e-mail address; institutional affiliation; research advisor’s name; ACM student member number; category (undergraduate or graduate); research title; and an extended abstract addressing the following: * Problem and Motivation: Clearly state the problem being addressed and explain the reasons for seeking a solution to this problem. * Background and Related Work: Describe the specialized (but pertinent) background necessary to appreciate the work in the context of ICFP areas of interest. Include references to the literature where appropriate, and briefly explain where your work departs from that done by others. * Approach and Uniqueness: Describe your approach in addressing the problem and clearly state how your approach is novel. * Results and Contributions: Clearly show how the results of your work contribute to programming language design and implementation in particular and to computer science in general; explain the significance of those results. * Submissions must be original research that is not already published at ICFP or another conference or journal. One of the goals of the SRC is to give students feedback on ongoing, unpublished work. Furthermore, the abstract must be authored solely by the student. If the work is collaborative with others and*or part of a larger group project, the abstract should make clear what the student’s role was and should focus on that portion of the work. * Formatting: Submissions must be in PDF format, printable in black and white on US Letter sized paper, and interpretable by common PDF tools. All submissions must adhere to the "ACM Small" template that is available (in both LaTeX and Word formats) from https://www.acm.org/publications/authors/submissions. For authors using LaTeX, a lighter-weight package, including only the essential files, is available from http://sigplan.org/Resources/Author/#acmart-format. The submission must not exceed 3 pages in PDF format. Reference lists do not count towards the 3-page limit. Further information is available at the ICFP SRC website: https://icfp21.sigplan.org/track/icfp-2021-Student-Research-Competition Program Committee: Chair: Anders Miltner (UT Austin) Andreea Costea (NUS Singapore) Andrew Hirsch (MPI-SWS) Liam O'Connor (University of Edinburgh) Lionel Parreaux (HKUST) Daming Zou (ETH Zurich)

building git master fails
by Jörg F. Wittenberger 04 Jui '21

04 Jui '21

trying to build the master branch from githug fails I followed the steps from INSTALL.txt section 1 §2 (wget ...gambit-4_9_3-devel.tar.gz et.c) followed ./configure --enable-single-host --prefix=~/test make make bootstrap git pull make realclean # again: ./configure --enable-single-host --prefix=~/test make ---- The resulting ___CHARALPHABETICP being undefined I solved by adding a line to config.h.in: #define ___USE_C_RTS_CHAR_OPERATIONS But the "Ill-placed 'declare'" in _num.scm line 5525 is above my head. Looks an issue with `define-prim&proc` -- but I don't understand it. Any help appreciated. best Jörg

02 Jui '21

CALL FOR TUTORIAL, PANEL, AND DISCUSSION PROPOSALS ICFP 2020 25th ACM SIGPLAN International Conference on Functional Programming August 22 - 27, 2021 Virtual https://icfp21.sigplan.org/ The 25th ACM SIGPLAN International Conference on Functional Programming will be held virtually on August 22-27, 2021. ICFP provides a forum for researchers and developers to hear about the latest work on the design, implementations, principles, and uses of functional programming. Proposals are invited for tutorials, lasting approximately 3 hours each, to be presented during ICFP and its co-located workshops and other events. These tutorials are the successor to the CUFP tutorials from previous years, but we also welcome tutorials whose primary audience is researchers rather than practitioners. Tutorials may focus either on a concrete technology or on a theoretical or mathematical tool. Ideally, tutorials will have a concrete result, such as "Learn to do X with Y" rather than "Learn language Y". Just like last year, following the success of the #ShutDownPL event @ ICFP, we are also inviting proposals for panels and discussions on topics of broader interest to the PL community. Tutorials, panels, and discussions may occur before or after ICFP, co-located with the associated workshops, on August 22 or August 26-27. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Submission details Deadline for submission: June 28th, 2020 Notification of acceptance: July 5th, 2020 Prospective organizers of tutorials are invited to submit a completed tutorial proposal form in plain text format to the ICFP 2021 workshop co-chairs (Leonidas Lampropoulos and Zoe Paraskevopoulou), via email to icfp-workshops-2021(a)googlegroups.com by June 28th, 2021. Please note that this is a firm deadline. Organizers will be notified if their event proposal is accepted by July 5th, 2021. The proposal form is available at: http://www.icfpconference.org/icfp2021-files/icfp21-panel-form.txt http://www.icfpconference.org/icfp2021-files/icfp21-tutorials-form.txt ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Selection committee The proposals will be evaluated by a committee comprising the following members of the ICFP 2021 organizing committee. compiling for arm android on linux
by Sonny To 25 Mai '21

How to compile a simple hello world program on x86 to arm for android? --- hello.scm --- (define wassup (lambda () (display "hello from scheme\n"))) (wassup) ---end hello.scm--- % gsc -exe -target arm hello.scm % adb push ./hello /data/local/tmp % adb shell /data/local/tmp/hello /system/bin/sh: /data/local/tmp/hello: not executable: 64-bit ELF file % file hello hello: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, BuildID[sha1]=64cb09b1432959e8f4f9734d72e99580f6091497, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0, with debug_info, not stripped This doesn't like the -target option is generating an ARM binary. FFI/c-define-type is fine with the C++ std::shared_ptr RAII type?
by Phillip Suero 20 Mai '21

20 Mai '21

Dear Marc, I was thinking, is the FFI (|c-define-type|) compatible with the C++ RAII in such a way that C++'s std::shared_ptr can be used as (c-define-type my-struct-shared "shared_ptr<my_struct>")? shared_ptr is a refcounted slot, where the +1 and -1 refcount update is carried out by the RAII. If I would not pass the std::shared_ptr as (c-define-type my-struct-shared "shared_ptr<my_struct>"), then instead I would wrap it in a C/C++ struct which then contains the std::shared_ptr as its only slot. Please let me know your thoughts on what's the best approach. Here is a test case: (c-declare #<<c-declare-end #include <memory> typedef struct my_struct { int value; } my_struct; using namespace std; c-declare-end ) (c-define-type my-struct-shared "shared_ptr<my_struct>") (define (make-my-struct) (c-lambda () my-struct-shared #<<c-lambda-end std::shared_ptr<my_struct> out = std::make_shared<my_struct>(); out->value = 0; ___return(out); c-lambda-end )) (make-my-struct) Gambit v4.9.3 > (load "shared_ptr") "/path/to/shared_ptr.o2" > (make-my-struct) #<procedure #2 shared_ptr#0> > (define a (make-my-struct)) > a #<procedure #2 shared_ptr#0> At least it does compile! Looking forward to your confirmation if this is safe & best practice. ( When I skip the "using namespace std;" and prepend "std::" to (c-define-type my-struct-shared "shared_ptr<my_struct>"), I do get weird compiler errors however. ) Phil

API to parse floats in Scheme
by Lassi Kortela 12 Mai '21

12 Mai '21

We are planning a simple SRFI to mae floats from integers (or from strings), since that's useful when parsing any kind of text syntax that has real numbers. The details are implementation-dependent and tricky to get right. Here's the spec we have so far: https://github.com/pre-srfi/make-float The API is: (inexact-real-from-strings int frac precision exp) -> real (inexact-real-from-integers int frac frac-length precision exp) -> real Example usage: (inexact-real-from-strings "-123" "45" 'e "6") ; => -123.45e6 (inexact-real-from-integers -123 45 2 'e 6) ; => -123.45e6 The 2 in the last example means two decimal places. It's needed to disambiguate between .6 .06 .006 .0006 etc. There are both math and Scheme wizards on this list. Could someone verify whether this is a sane design before we submit the SRFI draft? It's been ok'd by one mathematician already so I'm hopeful :) There's also an inverse API to serve as a backend for string formatting packages: (strings-from-inexact-real real frac-length) -> int; frac; exp (integers-from-inexact-real real frac-length) -> int; frac; exp
