4.0b22 doesn't seem to be respecting --prefix= at install. I looked through the makefile and notice that there is a PACKAGE_SUBDIR (/ 4.0b22) appended to prefix. Is this supposed to happen by default? I don't recall previous Gambit betas doing this, and am not sure I want to add another set of directories to PATH et al. Is there a way to work around this?

The new directory structure, which is explained on the first page of the Gambit manual, has been in use for several betas. If you are installing version VERSION with a prefix of PREFIX, the following directories are created to store the executable files, libraries, etc:
PREFIX/VERSION <- contains bin/, lib/, include/, etc PREFIX/current <- symbolic link to PREFIX/VERSION
This organization allows multiple versions of Gambit to coexist in the PREFIX directory. By putting "PREFIX/current/bin" in your PATH, you will automatically have access to the latest version of Gambit installed. You don't have to change your PATH when a new version is installed. But if you wish to execute a specific version of Gambit, you can specify that in the path, i.e. PREFIX/4.0b20/bin/gsi .
