All my testing so far consisted of calling "gsc -link foo.scm" to create c files and then compiling them with "gcc ...". Plain old "gsc foo.scm" does indeed exhibit the behavior you described. Are you able to run "gsc -link foo.scm"? If so, then I would say you at least "got it running". Not sure where the problem lies. Since the cygwin system call API is POSIX compliant, I'm going to guess that it's a configuration script problem. That is, I'm guessing that somewhere configure assumes something like "if we have windows.h then without exception make all system calls through cmd.exe". I'm looking in the source but haven't found it yet.

Experimental tree-shaker

I have implemented a simple quick-and-dirty tree-shaker for those interested in experimenting with such a thing. To try it out, update your Gambit to the latest sources. The tree- shaker is disabled by default. To use it you must compile your program this way: % gsc -e '(set! c#targ-tree-shake? #t)' test.scm The tree-shaker will only remove from a compiled file the procedures which are not reachable *and* defined in the scope of a (declare (block)). So if you compile this program: (declare (block)) (define (f x) (+ (* x x) (- x 1))) (define (g y) (f (f y))) (pp 123) both f and g are eliminated. If the (pp 123) is changed to (pp (g 123)) then there is code generated for f, but ***not for g*** because the compiler has inlined g so that the main call is really (pp (f (f 123))). For the experimenter... implement a Scheme library in lib.scm and compile your program like so: (declare (block)) (include "lib.scm") ...your program here... The last step is to link with a minimal Gambit runtime library containing only _kernel.scm . Marc

Hi, how can I convert a float number to a integer number? Ok, there are floor, truncate, round, but the result have always a dot in it. I'd like to convert the number - it is (round (time->seconds (current-time))) - to a string without the dot. Thanks for help! Christoph Bauer

[ANNOUNCE] intergit repository-linking tool (early release)

Hello Ten days ago I started a thread about "Separating generated files?" [1], and suggested in the end that instead of using git submodule functionality, one might be better off using a tool which can, upon committing files in the repository containing generated files, add a link ("reference") pointing to the commit in the source repository which represents the source files they have been generated from, and then when someone is checking out some revision of the source files later, use this information to find the (best-)matching commit in the repository with the generated files. This may also be useful in other situations where one likes to keep repositories separate but they have a version dependency on each other. I've now written a first version of a pair of these two programs, which accomplishes this. You can get them from: http://www.christianjaeger.ch/dyn/pubgit/gitweb?p=intergit.git;a=summary git clone http://christianjaeger.ch/pubgit/intergit.git This will need some finish before really being production ready; it will mainly need some experimentation on how it is to be used exactly, so that possibly missing features in the search and indexing algorithms can be added (like whether it should understand merges between two commits containing references as a commit having both references even if the merge commit doesn't specify a reference), and I'm also keen on some feedback implementation-wise (building the index is currently slow, and some of the problems that I'm listing in the docs (Implementation.txt and TODO.txt) may have solutions I've not been aware of). I've tried to add some useful documentation (see *.txt files), so I'm hoping this helps anyone interested to understand how it works, or just give me some feedback on how it may or may not be useful. I've developed and tested it on Linux. Hints on whether it works under other systems and how to make it work with msysgit would be very appreciated. heartbeat frequency problem in make check

Hello! Since I joinded this list, I compiled from source (on RHEL4, RHEL5 and Debian 4; 32 and 64 bit arhitectures) various versions of gambit-c. The tests 4 and 6 from make check have given values close to the expected ones for heartbeat frequency, EXCEPT for the latest few versions of gambit-c. (I don't remember the last good one) For the v4.3.0, regardless of the configuration options I use (--enable-single-host --enable-gcc-opts --enable-inline-jumps --enable-shared), the architecture (32/64 bits, amd/intel), I get ~ 40 Hz instead of close to 500 Hz expected. make targets

The Gambit distribution comes with makefiles supporting many targets including the following: % make bootstrap Builds the system and copies the gsc executable to gsc-comp in the root directory. The makefiles call up gsc-comp to compile the Scheme source files in the system if they are modified. % make mostlyclean Removes all the files that can be regenerated using standard tools (C compiler, TeX, etc). The C files generated by gsc, and the gsi and gsc executables are not removed. % make clean Removes all the files that can be regenerated by a "make" (object files, C files generated by gsc, etc) **except** gsi and gsc. This is useful to bootstrap from the Scheme sources after gsc has been built with an initial "make bootstrap". % make realclean Like "make clean", but also removes gsi and gsc, and all the makefiles generated by the configure script. Some users are surprised that "make clean" does not bring the directory to the state it was in after the tarball was untarred. I guess it is a fairly universal convention that "make clean" should work that way. So I'm thinking of changing the targets as follows: % make bootstrap No change. % make mostlyclean Removes all the files that are generated by a "make", except those that are installed by a "make install", such as the gsi and gsc executables, the Gambit libraries and documentation. % make clean Removes all the files that are generated by a "make", including the gsi and gsc executables. % make realclean Removes all the files that can be regenerated by the configure script and a "make" after a "make bootstrap". In particular all makefiles and C files generated from Scheme files are removed. This is useful for bootstrapping from the Scheme sources. So the procedure for building Gambit from the tarball will be: % tar zxf gambc-v4_3_0-devel.tgz % ./configure % make bootstrap After that a % make realclean % ./configure % make will build the system by regenerating the .c files from .scm files using the gsc-comp built by the "make bootstrap". Embedding Gambit as a dll.

Hello, I'm working on a project to make an iTunes plugin. I want to use Scheme as an embedded extension language for it. I've managed to get this working using Tiny Scheme, but now would like to try to get a better (i.e. faster) Scheme implementation in there. Hopefully, I can get compiled Scheme in there, instead of interpreted. Is it possible to do this with Gambit? The crux of the problem is that the scheme code cannot declare main(). Instead, it needs to provide an init function and a deinit function. My plugin would call the init function when it loads, and the deinit function when it unloads. There is no stdin or stdout. When the plugin is operating, iTunes will repeatedly call a single function, lets call it the work function. (Actually, there is a stdout.. because if I call printf, the output ends up in the system log file. But I can't reassign it, and there's no stdin). So, the init function will need to set up the scheme environment. Then, when the work function is called, it will need to reference the scheme environment, and call a scheme function in that environment to do the work. I need to provide this functionality as a library that is dynamically loaded by iTunes. As I mentioned above, iTunes already declares main(). If someone could point me at some sample code that embeds Gambit in this manner, or otherwise point me in the right direction, it would be a great help. Thanks, Neil Baylis.
