What is the closest I can get to the following? -- foo.scm -- (namespace ("foo#)) (define x 20) -- main.scm -- (load "foo") (alias "foo#" "bar#") ; how do I do this? (pp bar#x); I want it to say 20 Thanks!

Black Hole Error

With the latest gambit version I get 3 errors while compiling std modules in black hole. If you specify -- enable-single-host then a single (large) C function will contain the whole group of Scheme procedures in the file. This usually generates much faster code (factor of 2 is typical) but the C compiler will take longer and require more memory. Unfortunately the gcc compiler has a time/space complexity that is not very stable over successive version of the compiler. So one version of gcc may compile the code in a reasonable time, and the next may require so much memory that the C compilation fails. Newer versions are not necessarily better. Marc

macros talking to each other

Is it possible to define macros foo & bar so that the following code: (foo '(1 2 3)) ... some junk ... (bar) becomes, at compile time: '() ... some junk ... '(1 2 3) -- the real question being, right now, each macro expansion seems to happen in it's own little world -- is there anyway they can communicate? Thanks!

in C, I can do something like: #ifndef H_blah #define H_blah ... #endif how can I do something similar for files (include ... 'ed) in gambit? I have some define-types , and I only want the define-types to load once. Thanks!

Remote debugger problem

Hey Marc (and other Gambit folks, I realized this would be good for the gambit list too), Your remote debugger is awesome. However, it travels further into the land of Gambit IO than I know. I'm having one problem with it (I got the latest version of it). I found a rather concise example of the problem. It seems that when two errors happen close enough in time, one remote debugger pops open with the correct error, and another pops open with this error: *** ERROR IN rdi-open-client, "Users/james/projects/scheme/gambit-iphone-example/lib/util/remote-debugger/rdi.scm"@108.5 -- Broken pipe (force-output '#<input-output-port #3 (tcp-client "localhost" 20000)>) > You can get it to do this by just doing this in the debugee: (thread-start! (make-thread (lambda () (/ 1 0)))) (thread-start! (make-thread (lambda () (/ 1 0)))) Would you mind looking at it? As a separate subject, as I was integrating the remote debugger with my iphone app, I realized I can not only have access to the debugger from the iphone, but I can also fire up a main REPL and interactively develop from my main computer on the iphone! That is very cool. Now, I can't call (##repl-debug-main) in the primordial thread, as your proof of concept does, because the main thread is the program which needs to continue executing. So, my first attempt fired up the REPL from a child thread instead: (thread-start! (make-thread (lambda () (##repl-debug-main)))) Do you see any problems with this? This seems to work fine (a real Gambit REPL pops open in an xterm when the app start in the iphone simulator). This got me thinking too: what is the relationship between stdin and stdout and the main REPL? It seems that standard output is somehow redirected to this REPL. Rather, if I call DISPLAY on any other thread it somehow appears in my above REPL. How is that so? Thanks, James http://jlongster.com/

Compiling Gambit on Solaris 10

Some people have reported that Gambit does not compile "out of the box" on Solaris 10 with gcc. The error message output by gcc when compiling Gambit is the following: In file included from /usr/include/sys/wait.h:24, from os.h:998, from _std.c:2273: /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:259: error: parse error before "ctid_t" /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:292: error: parse error before '}' token /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:294: error: parse error before '}' token /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:390: error: parse error before "ctid_t" ... It appears that the problem is caused by an improperly installed gcc (compiled on Solaris 9 and incompatible with the new header files in Solaris 10). The problem with gcc is discussed here: http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5077618 A permanent solution is to recompile and reinstall gcc on Solaris 10 (as explained in the link above). A temporary solution is to use the following configure command: % ./configure CC="gcc -Dctid_t=id_t -Dzoneid_t=id_t" What this does is to define the ctid_t and zoneid_t types used by the Solaris 10 sys/wait.h file (these types did not exist in Solaris 9). There is another problem with the Gambit makefiles on Solaris (the use of a GNU extension to the sed utility). The fix has been pushed to Gambit's git repository. Marc
