Hello Here's a simple patch to make it possible to get the results of previous evaluations in the repl. (Or have I overlooked an existing mechanism for that (other than through the serial number)?) It creates |it| and similar global variables in the default namespace. What (I think) I would prefer, but don't know how to do, is: - make those be bound lexically to the code being entered instead, so that they don't pollute any namespace and don't need any namespace vodoo to be accessed from the entered code. I imagine that the variables could be put into the lexical environment of the code being eval'ed, but simply wrapping with `(let ((it ,old-it)) ,body) wouldn't do (this would at least break top-level defines). - make those variables/bindings per-thread, or maybe even per-repl. (I'd prefer not having to type parens around parameter objects. But shoveling around the values between lexical context and internal state or parameter object values would solve this.) Hello I'm trying to write a program which I can use as wrapper around gambit in interactive sessions, especially in emacs, to provide more sensible buffering for making output appear faster in emacs. Here's how I start gambit under emacs currently: #!/bin/bash ulimit -S -v 300000 gsc -:tE,d-,t8,f8 -i -e '(include "/home/chris/schemedevelopment/gambit/chj.scm")' - and here's how I would like to run it once that wrapper is finished: #!/bin/bash ulimit -S -v 300000 bufferi -:tE gsc -:tE,d-,t8,f8 -i -e '(include "/home/chris/schemedevelopment/gambit/chj.scm")' - The "bufferi" program forks off a child connected to the parent through a pipe and exec'ing the given command-line. It then reads input from the pipe into a buffer, which it only writes to stdout if either the buffer is full or a certain time has passed. (In the code pasted at the bottom of this mail, buflen is set to 10 bytes, and timeout to .03 seconds.) There are a few issues I've run into: 1. when using open-process, the subprocess doesn's seem to be connected to the original standard input anymore. why? (try it out by commenting out section "a)" in the bufferi-standalone.scm code and uncommenting the section "b)".) 2. when I use a self-written pipe/fork/dup2/exec infrastructure instead of open-process, I'm getting an "Invalid argument" exception unless I run ##char-ready? onto the current-input-port before dup'ing the pipe into it's position. Yes I'm changing fd 0 underneath the gambit runtime. How could I "cleanly" create a port from an existing unix fd instead? 2. when I use that self-written pipe/fork/dup2/exec infrastructure, the child actually *can* read from the original standard input, as it should, but it is getting an "Resource temporarily unavailable" error. I think it is because of O_NONBLOCK. So I have written fd-nonblocking-set! and fd-nonb functions. As seen in the above strace, it's enough for gambit carrying the same open file as another fd (namely fd 1) and the problem persists. The ugly thing is that I cannot remove fd 1 from gambit's control as well, since I want to write output to it. So I have another (more important, or additional) suggestion: could gambit be instructed to not use O_NONBLOCK at all? Maybe it could even transparently defer switching on O_NONBLOCK until it really has multiple active threads at once. (Maybe additionally D.J. Bernstein's approach could be cloned? Quoting him: "Here's what I'm doing now: 1. Call read() or write() without further ado if the descriptor was originally provided in O_NONBLOCK mode or refers to a regular file. (Of course, it's possible that somebody subsequently turned O_NONBLOCK off; every program relying on O_NONBLOCK is taking this risk.) 2. Use poll(), if it's available and functioning, to check whether the descriptor is ready. 3. Set an interval timer. 4. Call read() or write(). 5. Turn the interval timer off." but just being able to instruct gambit to not use O_NONBLOCK globally would be enough for my case.) Thanks Christian. Here are the two files for testing the above.
