Guys,
I would like to share my thoughts about the upcoming meetings. (Although I organize most of the meetings, I do it for all of us, not just for me. So don't be afraid to propose new things. I'm open-minded. Don't be shy ;-)
First, I propose to hold our next meeting Wednesday, August 29th. We could simply meet in a nice pub and a have a good time. I will let you propose cool places and reach consensus. (I will be in vacation for the next 3 weeks, so don't expect me to participate in these discussions. Your choice will be mine.)
For our September meeting (date to be detemined), I would like to try something different. Instead of having someone prepare a single formal presentation, I think it would be great if several people could just give a short demo (15 mins) of things they are working on. A DemoCamp like event. Let's call it a SchemeCamp. What do you think? Is it a good idea? Something worth considering?
Finally, our October meeting will take place during/around the OOPSLA conference. Pascal Constanza, a well Lisp and organizer of the Dynamic Languages Symposium, accepted tol give a talk. And there will be OOPSLA itself, with talks from John McCarthy and Guy Steele/Richard Gabriel.
What do you think?
Dominique

Sounds like a good idea. I think many of us have hacked, over the summer, on small things (maybe in CL, Erlang, etc ;) for which a full-blown presentation might be overkill.

Provided there not a lot of loud music, and that it is cheaper than our usual place, I think that it's a great idea.

Though I might not have the opportunity to attend any meeting unless it happens at the very beginning of September, I find this idea great. Maybe some lispy talk (opposed to some schemy talk) could also be welcome. So far, I haven't been introduced to much Lisp, but I'm quite new here...

That I need a shorter haircut :)

I think it would be best to have a meeting at the UdeM as usual followed by the pub. But instead of a single speaker, we could have 3 or 4 short presentations (say 20 to 30 minutes each). I say this because both David St-Hilaire and Christopher Diggins have said they would like to talk briefly about their work, and Etienne Bergeron has suggested privately that he could also talk about his DynaBit dynamic hardware synthesis system. It is more convenient to do demos in a meeting room with a projector, than at the pub!
And if we do this on the 29th (after the release of the R6RS ratification vote result) we can celebrate or drown our sorrows at the pub!
Marc
I can show the slides I presented to "newcas2007", with some modification to add the "scheme" part. I will probably be able to present (with my big <french> accent). The pres can be about 15 minutes.
ciao

This would work for me. I do want to hear about the DynaBit system as well.

That's what I initially planned for our September meeting (have you read the message I sent last month? https://webmail.iro.umontreal.ca/pipermail/mslug/2007-July/000142.html ;-). The goal was to meet more informally in August. But if everybody agrees to do that on August 29 instead, that's fine with me. And we can certainly keep that format for the upcoming meetings too. There are a few things I could demo myself.
So here is a list of potential demos for August 29:
- Christopher Diggins - David St-Hilaire - Etienne Bergeron
Anyone else?
It is more convenient to do demos in a meeting room with a projector, than at the pub!
That goes without saying!
And if we do this on the 29th (after the release of the R6RS ratification vote result) we can celebrate or drown our sorrows at the pub!
The timing is perfect!

tsk tsk. don't underestimate the power of the napkin!

from my experience as an undergrad at André-Aisenstadt, I can assure you that to celebrate and to drown are the same thing! (eq? => #t)
