Hi, I decided to go at the last minute. We formed a team with a physician and were able to build a first prototype of a data visualization app for iPad that helps physicians compare different treatments for a given illness. The data comes from a database of a curated list of medical studies. We started the programming saturday morning at 9 and finished at 5pm with a working app. We had an interface designer with us so the app is also gorgeous. All the code (95% would be more accurate) is written in Gambit and using a remote REPL we were able to develop interactively. We also used macros intensively to generate some code for us. Some of them were provided be Jeffrey Read (thank you Jeff) for FFI to Objective-C generation. This was crucial when we were at the very end trying to tweak the interfaces to the taste of the physician. It was an amazing experience. We didn't win a prize but we developed, by far, the most advanced app of all the teams in my opinion (only one other team had an iOS app and they that just two very simple screens that we could have done in 10 minutes). Remote REPL in iOS app

Hi, I am currently building an iOS app with Gambit and I (of course) need a REPL-server in it so I can develop interactively instead of recompiling the app every time I make a change. I saw the REPL-server that Marc developed in the iOS example folder of Gambit distribution so I tried to integrate it in my app. I was able to make it work but I have some problems. When I first tried it I tried to run the repl server in a separate gambit thread. I therefore defined the following: (c-define (init-repl-server) () void "initREPLServer" "" ; Start a REPL server (thread-start! (make-thread (lambda () (display "\n\nStarting REPL server on port 7000\n") (repl-server-start "toto"))))) In the objective-c method (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions I called the gambit setup and then the initREPLServer(); function. This didn't work: when the C function returned the Gambit thread died (this is my interpretation) and I could not connect to the server. I therefore tried put an infinite-loop at the end of the (init-repl-server) function. It worked but the app would not finish the startup process since "application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions" call never returns YES as expected. I then tried to run the scheme program in a separate thread (in that thread the call to (init-repl-server) in C would not have to return and would keep running). [NSThread detachNewThreadSelector:@selector(initReplServer) toTarget:self withObject:nil]; I could then connect to the repl server but all assignments in objects are ignored by the interface loop since they are done in a separate thread. I then had the idea to use objective-c blocks (kind of closures in the objective-c world). [[NSOperationQueue mainQueue] addOperationWithBlock:^{ object.slot=value; }]; This worked.... All the updates were now done in the GUI while working in the remote REPL. One day I tried to instantiate a UIWebView and the app crashed. UIWebView only works in the "main" thread. I don't like the idea to have the REPL-server and Scheme program in a separate thread. So I tried to put just the REPL-server in a separate thread and run my actual scheme program in the main thread. In this setup I could connect to the remote REPL but all the variables in the Scheme world are not pointing to the right memory location so everything is scrambled. Is there a way out of this...? Can my program run in the main thread while still having a working remote REPL to debug it? Thank you, Francois Magnan

The gsc that you are trying to execute is the one compiled for the iPhone simulator (i.e. that gsc would have to be executed in the iPhone simulator... You want to use the Mac OS X version to compile/link init.scm (generating init.c and init_.c) then you use Xcode to create an iPhone project, you include the init.c and init_.c files, and link with the **iPhone** libgambc.a . Then you have an application that can run on the iPhone. In other words, in the iPhone builds of Gambit, ignore gsi and gsc. You only want the libraries (libgambc.a, etc). Marc

Compiling Gambit for iOS4

Hi, I tried to compile Gambit 4.6.0 for the iPhone with iOS4.1 and after many different tries I was unsuccessful. I tried to follow James Long instructions, I tried to apply Alex Quieroz patch, I tried with earlier versions of Gambit. It always fails for me. I pasted parts of a sample compile session below. It seems that configure doesn't work as expected since make runs it again. If somebody on this list could compile the latest Gambit for Simulator and iOS and make it available somewhere it would be greatly appreciated. I offer myself to host those files if needed. Following the success of my "Gambit Scheme: Inside Out" presentation at ILC2010 last week (http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~gambit/Gambit-inside-out.pdf) I'm in the process of writing a sample iPhone application to show how to use Gambit on the iPhone. Sent my first application for review

Hello all, Today I sent my first iPhone app for review. It's a Reversi game where the user plays against the IA. The IA is written is Scheme, and is accessed by the ObjC code as a pure C library. Yes, I know there are lots and lots of Reversi games already! :) But my goal was to "start in the business", even with something simple, and to have something to show when I start hunting for software development projects so I can leave my day job. Touch Translation

Hey all, I was looking into porting the touch events into gambit, but I am pretty new to gambit and the c ffi specifically. The touch events are somewhat complex, taking an NSSet * and a UIEvent *. From what I can tell, the NSSet contains all current touch points (so if you have three fingers down, the NSSet contains three touch points) and the UIEvent has a history of all the touch points and where they have been since the first "touchesBegan" event, though I am not sure of the specific structure of these objects yet. I am wondering what is the best way to translate these into scheme data structures? Thanks for any guidance on this, and I also noticed that James was talking about working on touch facilities as well. Maybe we could join forces on this? Or maybe you are already done? - Ryan

emacs/slime repl integration

So after using the repl for some time, it has become clear that it needs to be integrated into emacs. For one, copy/paste on the mac doesn't work with X11, and beyond that, if it was in emacs I could develop the whole program in the repl, and save the relevant bits to a file afterwards. An ideal way to develop. I'm not too up on emacs internals, anyone have any idea what it would take? Could slime read from the repl's port? If we are lucky this wouldn't even be too much work, I am just wondering how to begin? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, thanks! - Ryan
