Ah, added longer term wish:

https://github.com/gambit/gambit/issues/288 , "Implement UDP packet
communication support, as client and server"


And broke out from the userland ports as separate issues:

https://github.com/gambit/gambit/issues/286 , "Make the IO subsystem allow
arbitrary live switches between binary and various text encoding modes, and
between line endings"

https://github.com/gambit/gambit/issues/287 , "Make read/write-byte/char
fast (currently unacceptably slow for real world use e.g. 200kops/sec)"
