But I'm willing to give it a try in 3 weeks. So... The next meeting will be at the Universit? de Montr?al at 7:00 pm on Thursday November 24. Marc Feeley will give a presentation on the development of Gambit REPL, a version of the Gambit Scheme programming system for iOS and Android devices. Marc will also demonstrate a distributed computing application on iPhones written in a few lines of Scheme code. If you bring your iPhone/iPad or notebook computer, you can participate in the demo! Gambit's web site: http://gambit.iro.umontreal.ca The meeting will be held at the usual place, room 3195 of the Pavillon Andr?-Aisenstadt of the Universit? de Montr?al Campus (building 20 on this map: http://www.umontreal.ca/plancampus/documents/carte-campus.pdf). I hope we can share some beer or meal after the presentation at one of the local restaurants! If you haven't signed up on the MSLUG meetup site, please do so. Moreover, it would be nice if you could RSVP on the meetup site so that we know who is planing to come. Please tell your friends and coworkers about the meeting! The meetup site is at this url: http://www.meetup.com/Montreal-Scheme-Lisp-Users-Group See you on the 24th! You can try to run it yourself on two computers on the same LAN to see what it does. See you soon! We had one talk graciously delivered by Dominique Bouchard who discussed the use of Erlang in his company's speech recognition software. I've put up a rough web site for the group here: http://erlang-montreal.com One of the reasons for the lack of subsequent meetings is my own workload and the absence of sufficient volunteer help. Therefore, I'm wondering if the two groups can collaborate to host a meeting. I'm willing to deliver a talk about building a highly parallel server using Erlang's OTP framework. It would be an introductory talk aimed at someone not familiar with Erlang, describing Erlang's distinguishing features. I will try to make it to the MSLUG meeting tonight to gauge interest. If you are working with Scheme/Lisp or related language (e.g. JavaScript), then please consider giving a presentation. Don't be shy... we all have a story to tell. If no one comes forward, then I can prepare a talk on the Gambit REPL app for iPhone. I can also ask my students to present some of the work we are doing on the compilation of JavaScript. > > - You can also propose to me other people who you think might give an interesting presentation. Here are the PDFs of the presentations I gave at the MSLUG last thursday. http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~gambit/Gambit-REPL.pdf http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~gambit/Distributed-computing-with-Gambit.pdf Moreover, the code of the demo can be found here: http://dynamo.iro.umontreal.ca/~gambit/wiki/index.php/Script:MSLUG:teleport.scm Note that the demo can be executed on Gambit REPL and on the "plain" Gambit. Heterogeneous networks are not a problem... threads can teleport from one platform type (such as an ARM based iPhone) to a platform of another type (such as an x86 Windows). Have fun! Marc
