I窶冤l look into this, but in the meantime, try

  (##shell-command-blocking "echo hello > newfile1")

This is the original implementation of shell-command, which has the 
unfortunate side-effect of blocking the program while the shell command is 
executing.  But maybe this is ok for your application.
