Okay ..make check worked when I used CC=gcc-6 .... I think it was an issue with clang!

Could you try this exact sequence to see if that works?

   git clone https://github.com/gambit/gambit.git
   cd gambit
   ./configure
   make -j4 latest-release
   ./configure --enable-single-host
   make -j4 from-scratch
   make check
